General Information on Using PROVENGE

Some considerations to keep in mind during treatment with PROVENGE include the following:
  • This medication is given as an injection into a vein (an intravenous, or IV, injection) approximately every two weeks, for a total of three doses.
  • You will need a procedure to have white blood cells removed from your blood about three days before each dosage of PROVENGE. Your white blood cells will be used to create your individual dosage.
  • The PROVENGE IV injection is given slowly, over about 60 minutes. A slow IV injection is also sometimes called an IV infusion.
  • Your healthcare provider may give you medications, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol®) and diphenhydramine (Benadryl®, Sominex®, and many others), about 30 minutes before your PROVENGE dosage. These "premedications" help reduce the chance of infusion reactions, such as fever and chills.
  • For this drug to work properly, it must be used as prescribed. Make sure to keep all of your appointments with your healthcare provider.
  • If you are unsure about anything related to dosing with PROVENGE, please talk to your healthcare provider or pharmacist.
