Supprelin LA Drug Information
Supprelin® LA (histrelin implant) is a type of implant that releases a medication that helps stop puberty in children. This prescription product is specifically approved to treat central precocious puberty, which is a condition that causes puberty to begin earlier than it should (before age eight in girls and age nine in boys).
The implant is surgically inserted just under the skin of the upper arm and gradually releases medicine for 12 months. Supprelin LA works by blocking production of estrogen in girls and testosterone in boys. This decrease in hormones helps to temporarily stop puberty.
Although the drug is generally well tolerated, it is not suitable for everyone. Make sure your child's healthcare provider has up-to-date information on his or her medical history and a list of current medications before treatment is started with Supprelin LA. In particular, make sure to let the healthcare provider know if your child has depression or any allergies.
