Either local or systemic therapy is used in prostate cancer treatment -- although sometimes both methods are combined. Local therapy treats the cancer directly in the prostate; examples include surgery and radiation therapy. Systemic therapy affects the whole body in an attempt to destroy the cancer -- for example, hormone therapy. While prostate cancer treatment has obvious benefits, it also carries potentially serious risks. Therefore, before starting treatment, you may want a second opinion about your diagnosis and treatment plan.
