Prostate Cancer Symptoms (Cont.)

Finding the Disease Before Prostate Cancer Symptoms Develop

Two tests can be used to detect prostate cancer in the absence of any prostate cancer symptoms:

  • A digital rectal exam, in which a doctor feels the prostate through the rectum to find hard or lumpy areas
  • A prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test, a blood test used to detect a substance made by the prostate.

Together, these tests can detect many "silent" prostate cancers, that is, those that have not caused prostate cancer symptoms.
