Prostate Cancer Home > Generic Vantas

Although all of the patents have expired for Vantas (histrelin implant), no manufacturer has chosen to make a generic version of this drug. It is unknown why companies have not made a generic Vantas medication, but it may not be profitable to do so. Although histrelin is the active ingredient and the "generic name" of Vantas, it is not a generic version of the medicine.

Can I Buy Generic Vantas?

Vantas® (histrelin implant) is a prescription medication approved to treat metastatic prostate cancer (prostate cancer that has spread beyond the prostate to other areas of the body). It comes as a small implant that is inserted under the skin, and replaced once a year.
Vantas is manufactured by Endo Pharmaceuticals Solutions, Inc. At this time, Vantas is not available as a generic medication.

When Will a Generic Version Be Available?

Vantas is no longer under the protection of a patent that would prevent generic versions of the drug from being manufactured in the United States. The last patent for Vantas expired in March 2011. However, a generic version is not yet available.
It is difficult to predict when, or if, a generic Vantas will become available. Now that the medication is off-patent, several companies may choose to manufacturer a generic version of the drug.
Sometimes, medications go off-patent and no manufacturer chooses to make a generic version of it. This can be the case for medicines that are not prescribed frequently enough to make it profitable for a manufacturer to make a generic product. At this point, it is unknown if this will be the case for Vantas.

Is Histrelin a Generic Vantas?

No -- histrelin is the active ingredient in Vantas, but is not a generic version of it. What can be confusing is that the active ingredient of a drug is often referred to as the "generic name." The generic name is different from a generic version of a medicine.
In order for there to be a generic version of a medicine, the original medicine must have gone off-patent, and another company besides the original manufacturer must make the product.
