Pomegranates are claimed to have several health benefits. Pomegranates may help treat or prevent several conditions, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and certain types of cancer. Although some of these uses are more valid than others, none of these health benefits have been extensively studied. However, it is known that pomegranates contain certain components that may help to lower blood pressure and cholesterol.
What Are the Health Benefits of Pomegranate? You may have heard that pomegranates have many health benefits. While early research suggests that many of the claims may be valid, some are clearly overstated.
It seems like pomegranates are claimed to be useful for just about everything. People have claimed that pomegranates are beneficial for treating or preventing the following conditions:
- High blood pressure (hypertension)
- Congestive heart failure (CHF)
- High cholesterol
- Atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries)
- Parasitic infections
- HIV or AIDS
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- Canker sores
- Impotence (erectile dysfunction, or ED).
In ancient times, the pomegranate was used as a contraceptive and as a substance to cause miscarriages.
Some of these uses are more valid than others, but none have been extensively studied (see Does Pomegranate Work? for more information).
