Prostate Cancer Home > Generic Lupron Depot

The earliest that a generic version of Lupron Depot (leuprolide acetate depot) could become available is probably in May 2014, provided that no other patents or lawsuits are outstanding at that time. Contrary to popular belief, leuprolide acetate depot is the active ingredient in Lupron Depot -- often called the "generic name." This is not the same thing as a "generic version."

Can I Buy Generic Lupron Depot?

Lupron Depot® (leuprolide acetate depot) is a long-acting injectable prescription medication used to treat:

  • Advanced prostate cancer symptoms
  • Endometriosis (a condition in which tissue normally found in the uterus grow in other areas of the body)
  • Uterine fibroids (noncancerous growths in the uterus)
  • Central precocious puberty (puberty that occurs too early) in children.

This medicine comes in several strengths that may be given once a month, once every three months, or once every four months. It also comes in a pediatric form for use in children.

Lupron Depot is manufactured by Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited for Abbott Laboratories. It is currently under the protection of a patent that prevents any generic Lupron Depot from being manufactured in the United States.

When Will Generic Lupron Depot Be Available?

The first patents for Lupron Depot expired in January 2013 and September 2013. The next patent is set to expire in May 2014. This is the earliest predictable date that generic versions could become available.

However, other circumstances could come up to extend or shorten the exclusivity period. This could include such things as lawsuits or other patents for specific Lupron Depot uses. Once the next patent expires, there may be several companies that manufacture a generic Lupron Depot drug.
