Prostate Cancer Home > Flutamide and Breastfeeding
The effects of flutamide (Eulexin) on a breastfeeding woman and her infant are unknown. For one thing, the medication has not been studied in breastfeeding women. In addition, the drug is approved for use in men only and would not typically be prescribed for a woman, nursing or not. Women who are taking flutamide "off-label" should discuss this issue with their healthcare provider.
Is Flutamide Safe While Breastfeeding?
Flutamide (Eulexin®) is a prescription medication used in the treatment of prostate cancer. It works by blocking the effects of male hormones, such as testosterone (called androgens). Flutamide is used with a medicine that decreases the production of testosterone in the body. The combined action of these two medicines slows down the growth of prostate cancer cells, which depend on testosterone to grow.At this time, it is unknown if flutamide passes through breast milk. However, the medicine is not approved for use in women, although it may be prescribed "off-label" for a woman to treat hirsutism (excessive hair growth). Therefore, if you are nursing a child, talk with your healthcare provider prior to taking this medication.
