Prostate Cancer Home > Casodex Uses

If you have Stage IV prostate cancer, your healthcare provider may recommend the use of Casodex, an antiandrogen medication. Casodex is a type of hormone therapy that is given in combination with another hormone to reduce symptoms of advanced prostate cancer. In some cases, a healthcare provider will prescribe this drug for an unapproved (off-label) use, such as treating an earlier stage of prostate cancer.

What Is Casodex Used For?

Casodex® (bicalutamide) is a prescription medication approved for use as part of combination treatment in men with advanced prostate cancer. It is used with a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist medicine, sometimes called a luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LH-RH) agonist. GnRH agonist medicines include:
Prostate cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer in males. It starts when abnormal cells begin to grow in the tissue of the prostate gland.
After prostate cancer is diagnosed, doctors will determine how far the cancer has progressed and use this information to "stage" the cancer. Prostate cancer staging is based on the size of the tumor, as well as whether the cancer has spread to other areas of the body. In general, there are four stages (Stages I-IV). The higher the stage, the more advanced the cancer is (see Stages of Prostate Cancer for more information).
Stage IV prostate cancer is advanced, or late-stage, prostate cancer. In this stage, the cancer cells have spread widely to other areas of the body, such as the bladder, rectum, lymph nodes, or bone. Because the cancer has spread so widely, Stage IV prostate cancer is unlikely to be cured with surgery. Instead, treatment options may include:
  • Hormone therapy
  • Radiation
  • Chemotherapy.
Casodex is a hormone therapy treatment for prostate cancer. As mentioned, it is used in combination with another hormone treatment option.
