Generic Lupron Depot

Is Leuprolide Depot a Generic Lupron Depot?

No -- leuprolide depot is the active ingredient in Lupron Depot but is not a generic version of it. What can be confusing is that the active ingredient of any drug often is referred to as the "generic name." The generic name is different from a generic version of a medicine.

In order for there to be a generic version of a medicine, the original medicine must have gone off-patent and another company besides the original manufacturer must make the product.

Is Lupron Depot the Same as Lupron?

Lupron Depot and Lupron® (leuprolide acetate) contain the same active ingredient -- leuprolide. However, they are not the same medication. Lupron is given via a subcutaneous injection (an injection just beneath the skin) once a day. It is only approved to treat advanced prostate cancer and central precocious puberty. Lupron Depot and Lupron are not interchangeable.
