Generic Jevtana

There is currently no generic Jevtana (cabazitaxel) available because a patent prevents any generic forms from being manufactured in the United States. Sanofi-aventis has exclusive rights to market the medication until July 2012, which is the earliest date that a generic version could become available. It is important to note that cabazitaxel is the "generic name" of Jevtana, not a generic version of it.

Can I Buy Generic Jevtana?

Jevtana® (cabazitaxel) is a chemotherapy medication approved for the treatment of prostate cancer. It belongs to a group of medications known as taxanes. It is used when other types of prostate treatment have failed.

Jevtana is made by sanofi-aventis U.S., LLC. It is currently under the protection of a patent that prevents any generic versions from being manufactured in the United States.

When Will a Generic Version Be Available?

Sanofi-aventis holds the exclusive rights to market Jevtana until at least July 2012. This is the earliest possible date that a generic version could become available.

However, circumstances could extend this exclusivity period. This could include such things as lawsuits or other patents for specific Jevtana uses. Once the patent expires, several companies will likely begin manufacturing generic Jevtana.

Is Cabazitaxel a Generic Jevtana?

No -- cabazitaxel is the active ingredient in Jevtana, not a generic version of it. What can be confusing is that the active ingredient of a drug is often referred to as the "generic name."

The generic name is different from a generic version of a medicine. In order for there to be a generic version, the original medicine must have gone off-patent and another company besides the original manufacturer must make the product.
