What Is Fentanyl Nasal Spray Used For?

Fentanyl nasal spray is approved for treating breakthrough cancer pain in adults who are taking an around-the-clock pain medication. A healthcare provider may also prescribe this nasal spray to treat breakthrough pain associated with conditions other than cancer; however, this is not an approved use. Fentanyl nasal spray is only meant for use in people who are already accustomed to the effects of opioid medications.

An Overview of Uses for Fentanyl Nasal Spray

Fentanyl nasal spray (Lazanda®) is a prescription opioid nasal spray approved to treat breakthrough cancer pain. Breakthrough pain refers to intense flares of pain that occur despite around-the-clock pain medication. Because fentanyl nasal spray is a fast-acting drug, it can be used as needed to help relieve pain that "breaks through" regularly scheduled pain medication.

Fentanyl nasal spray is only approved for use in people who have already been using opioids and who are tolerant to their effects. In general, people are considered opioid tolerant if they have been taking at least 60 mg of morphine, 30 mg of oxycodone, 8 mg of hydromorphone, 25 mcg of fentanyl patch (Duragesic®), or an equivalent dose of another opioid every day for at least a week.

Fentanyl nasal spray is a Schedule II controlled substance because it has a high potential for abuse. Schedule II medications are considered to have the highest abuse potential of all prescription medicines. Therefore, there are strict rules and regulations for prescribing and obtaining them.

Because of the potential for abuse and overdose with this medication, it can only be obtained through a restricted program known as the fentanyl nasal spray Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) program. You, your healthcare provider, and the pharmacy that dispenses your medication must be enrolled in the REMS program for you to receive the medication. Your healthcare provider will talk to you about fentanyl nasal spray and the REMS program.
