Casodex

Available in the form of a tablet, Casodex is a medication used to treat prostate cancer that has spread to other areas of the body (advanced metastatic prostate cancer). It is taken once a day and is used in combination with another prostate cancer medication. What Is Casodex?

Casodex^® (bicalutamide) is a prescription medication approved for the treatment of advanced metastatic prostate cancer (prostate cancer that has spread to other areas of the body). It is used in combination with another prostate cancer medication that lowers the levels of testosterone in the body.

Who Makes This Medication?

Casodex is manufactured by IPR Pharmaceuticals, Inc., for AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals LP. Generic versions are made by various manufacturers.

How Does Casodex Work?

Prostate cancer cells grow in response to androgens (male sex hormones). Casodex is an androgen receptor inhibitor (sometimes called an antiandrogen). It works by binding to androgen receptors in the prostate and blocking the effect of naturally occurring androgens. This helps prevent the growth of cancer cells.

Casodex is used in combination with a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist medicine (sometimes called a luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone agonist). GnRH agonists reduce the amount of testosterone made by the body. Casodex blocks the action of the remaining testosterone.
